South African Revenue Service modernisation programme a success

News

South African Revenue Service (SARS) has successfully migrated their customs management systems to a new integrated Customs and Border Management Solution (iCBS) supplied by Interfront.

The iCBS replaces several key legacy systems, one of which served South Africa for more than 30 years. The SARS solution includes the iCBS Goods Declaration processing module, Tariff Management System, Customs Duty Calculator as well as the License and Certificate Management modules. The modernised system is also supported by a suite of specialised Systems Support Management tools.

The smooth transition to the new iCBS system is viewed by many industry players as a landmark roll-out of a solution of this scale and is a testament to the skills and expertise of the SARS programme team in which Interfront played a key role.

The iCBS supports all the South African land borders, sea and air ports. The installation of the Interfront system brings forth a new era for trade facilitation, risk mitigation and revenue assurance for South Africa.

The three year modernisation project concluded on 16 August 2013 after 9 months of rigorous parallel testing between the SARS legacy and new iCBS solution.

Interfront is privileged to have played a pivotal role in the SARS customs modernisation programme and looks forward to making significant contributions to further modernisation initiatives within SARS as well as other customs agencies outside the borders of South Africa.
